How Solutions S.A. is Revolutionizing Healthcare in Haiti through Technology
In Haiti, the healthcare system faces significant challenges, from a shortage of medical equipment and poor organization of health data to limited digital infrastructure and difficulties accessing care in remote areas. In response, technology is emerging as a powerful tool to enhance both efficiency and quality of healthcare delivery.
Amid these challenges, Solutions S.A., a Haitian company specializing in digital innovation, has developed and deployed MESI, an innovative platform designed to strengthen public health across the country.
MESI: a Centralized Medical Data System
MESI (Monitoring, Evaluation, and Integrated System) is changing the way healthcare data is managed in Haiti. By collecting, centralizing, and analyzing information from hundreds of health facilities nationwide, MESI gives authorities and healthcare organizations the insights they need to make smarter, data-driven decisions that can directly improve patient care.
The platform works seamlessly with Electronic Medical Records (EMRs), including iSanté, which many hospitals rely on to manage patient records, from consultations and diagnoses to treatments. Data from these systems flows automatically into MESI, where it is carefully structured, cleaned, and prepared for analysis.
iSanté is one of the most widely used EMRs in Haiti, designed to enhance patient management and improve coordination of care, particularly for chronic and infectious disease programs. With MESI, every time a patient is registered in iSanté, their information is instantly and accurately integrated into the national system. This ensures that healthcare leaders have access to reliable, up-to-date data, making it possible to generate meaningful reports and respond quickly to the country’s healthcare needs.
How MESI Works
To understand the central role of MESI in Haiti’s healthcare system, it helps to visualize its digital ecosystem and the various connections it maintains with applications, healthcare actors, and partners. MESI functions as an interoperability middleware, a convergence point that:
- Collects data from multiple sources,
- Cleans and standardizes it,
- Ensures its flow to national and international monitoring and analysis platforms.
At the heart of Haiti’s digital health system, MESI centralizes and standardizes data from health facilities, programs, and laboratories, redistributing it to platforms used for monitoring, analysis, and decision-making. It connects hospitals, clinics, health workers, and national and international partners through a unified infrastructure of reliable and secure data.
Facilities and programs feed MESI through a variety of tools:
- iSanté / iSanté+: Electronic Medical Records for patient management.
- Gheskio, PIH: Hospital and clinic information systems.
- Mobile applications: Field data collection by community health workers, even offline.
- Laboratories: National Public Health Laboratory (LNSP), Insurance Management Information System (IMIS).
- Vertical programs: HIV, tuberculosis, maternal care, vaccination, and more.
A Strategic Partnership with National and International Institutions
The development of MESI was made possible through fruitful collaboration with key national and international stakeholders. By working closely with hospitals, clinics, community health workers, laboratories, and partner organizations, Solutions S.A. ensured that MESI would meet the real needs of Haiti’s healthcare system.
These partnerships allowed the platform to integrate data from multiple sources, ensure interoperability with existing systems like iSanté, and align with national and international health reporting standards. Together, these collaborations have created a robust digital ecosystem where health data flows seamlessly, supporting informed decision-making and improving patient care across the country.
Some key partners include:
- I-TECH (International Training and Education Center for Health):
Provides technical expertise and trains local users. I-TECH, now commonly known as CHARESS, was instrumental in developing iSanté, an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) widely used in Haiti, particularly for HIV monitoring. The organization supports data quality, user training, and field mentoring. In collaboration with Solutions S.A., I-TECH contributes to the technical hosting of the national monitoring site (MESI) and addresses data quality issues.
- CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, États-Unis)
Provides funding and ensures alignment with international standards. The CDC works with Haiti’s Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP) to strengthen disease surveillance, laboratory capacity, and health training programs — notably through the Field Epidemiology Training Program (FETP) — as well as monitoring systems like MESI. The CDC has also supported the establishment of health infrastructure, particularly in post-disaster contexts, and coordinates technical responses to public health emergencies, including HIV, tuberculosis, and COVID-19.
- MSPP (Ministry of Public Health and Population of Haiti)
The MSPP plays the primary role in national supervision and governance of the healthcare system. It leads the national strategy for epidemiological surveillance, notably through systems like the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network, which now spans hundreds of data collection sites across the country. The MSPP receives, analyzes, and drives decision-making based on the consolidated data provided by MESI.
- Solutions S.A.
Solutions S.A. is responsible for the technical development, hosting, maintenance, and long-term continuity of the MESI platform. The company ensures that local needs are fully addressed and guarantees sustainability through regular training and on-the-ground user support.
Together, these partners have contributed their expertise to ensure that MESI is a secure, reliable, and internationally compliant tool.
National Coverage, Even in the Most Remote Areas
MESI also integrates mobile applications that allow community health workers to enter information directly in the field using smartphones. Even without an internet connection, data is stored locally and synchronized as soon as a network becomes available.
This feature has enabled, among other things, real-time monitoring of COVID-19 cases, even in remote regions, significantly improving the responsiveness of Haiti’s national healthcare system.
A Tangible Impact on Quality of Care
Thanks to MESI, healthcare professionals can track key indicators such as HIV, tuberculosis, maternal care, vaccination, and more. For example, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a chronic disease requiring careful monitoring. Before MESI, many clinics still relied on paper records, making follow-up complex or even impossible.
Today, over 600 healthcare facilities share their data with MESI on a weekly basis. This data is used to:
- Monitor priority health indicators
- Produce reliable nationwide reports
- Optimize resource allocation
- Improve patient care
At Hôpital Immaculée Conception in the south of the country, the platform has enabled better management of births, emergencies, and medical staff through more accurate and organized data collection.
Skills Transfer and Local Empowerment
Solutions S.A. goes beyond technology by strengthening local capacities. Continuous training is provided to healthcare facility staff to ensure optimal and sustainable use of the MESI platform.
This approach contributes to the digital autonomy of Haiti’s healthcare system by empowering local expertise and skills.
The Time to Act
With MESI, Solutions S.A. turns healthcare challenges into opportunities for innovation. Technology has become a key lever for improving the quality of care, even in the most complex contexts. Efficiency, data reliability, and rapid access to information are now within reach for Haitian healthcare facilities, thanks to solutions designed locally to meet local realities.
